Champaign-Urbana facilities we build for

  • Gyms and training studios around Campustown, downtown Champaign, and downtown Urbana
  • Student and multifamily housing amenity rooms near the University of Illinois campus
  • Physical therapy, chiropractic, and sports medicine clinics
  • Hotels and event venues along I-74 and I-57
  • Club and school athletic programs that need a team-sized room
  • Recovery studios and spas in Champaign, Savoy, and Danville

A college town brings a different buyer than a big metro: many rooms go into student housing, private training studios, and clinics that serve athletes, and many are renovations of an existing space rather than new construction. We work the same way either way: look at the room, the electrical service, and the ventilation before anything is designed.

The I-74 run from Fortville

The route is west around Indianapolis and out I-74 through Crawfordsville and Danville, with no tolls. It is the simplest out-of-state drive we have, but it is still a distance job, so we plan it that way: measurements and drawings up front, the heater and materials settled, components planned at our Fortville shop, and one on-site build window. Most custom saunas take one to two weeks from the agreed start date, depending on the room’s size and complexity.

Illinois code and working with your team

In Illinois the architect and general contractor of record handle the permit with the city or county. Public facilities must also meet the Illinois Accessibility Code, which sits alongside the 2010 ADA Standards. We work as the sauna trade under the general contractor and provide the room dimensions and ceiling height, heater model and electrical requirements, clearances, the ventilation plan, and where the heater, controls, and lighting go. Your electrician runs the dedicated circuit; the fire protection contractor uses our heater details to select sprinkler heads near the room.

Accessible benches and turning space

Under section 612 of the 2010 ADA Standards, a sauna with seating needs at least one bench meeting section 903 and a turning space under section 304. The section 903 bench is 42 inches long minimum, 20 to 24 inches deep, and 17 to 19 inches high, with back support 42 inches long that runs from no more than 2 inches to at least 18 inches above the seat, and it has to take 250 pounds of force. In wet locations the bench surface must be slip-resistant and shed water. We plan around those numbers and your architect’s approved drawings.

Trailer and outdoor wood-burning saunas

For outdoor programming or a mobile recovery business, we build trailer saunas at our Fortville shop. You provide the trailer and bring it to us, and we build the sauna on it. Our horse trailer conversion runs on a Harvia Cilindro 16 wood-burning stove, and a trailer can also take a propane or electric heater. Wood-burning heat is for outdoor standalone rooms and trailers only. See mobile and trailer saunas.

Our team and gym references

The Colts practice facility sauna is a hybrid room with traditional Finnish heat and an infrared source, sized for 8 to 10 linemen or 10 to 12 cornerbacks at once. Our gym reference is Indy City Barbell in downtown Indianapolis, and our community reference is YMCA Kokomo. We don’t have a Champaign-Urbana project to show yet.
