Working with architects and designers

Columbus is known nationally for its modern architecture, and plenty of local projects still start at a designer’s desk. That suits how we work. We give the design team clear inputs to draw from: finished room dimensions and ceiling height, the heater model and its electrical requirements, clearances, the ventilation plan, and where the heater, controls, and lighting will sit. Inside the room, the wood species, bench lines, glass, and lighting are all part of the design conversation, and we build to the approved drawings.

Home saunas in Columbus

Good spots in a Columbus house include an unfinished basement, a spare bedroom, a large bathroom, or a garage bay. A corner room that borrows two existing walls, like our 4–5 person cedar sauna in Grade A Western Red Cedar with an upper and a lower bench, keeps framing simple and leaves the rest of the space open. For tighter footprints, our 6 x 4.5 ft basement sauna still seats 5 or 6. We pick the heater by room volume and line the walls in cedar, hemlock, or Nordic spruce. In a modern interior, a glass door and under-bench LED strips keep a small room bright without glare.

Wooded lots toward Brown County

West of town, toward Brown County State Park, lots are often wooded and sloped, which makes an outdoor sauna appealing. On a slope, the first job is a level, well-drained footing so the cedar never sits in runoff; after that come a roof pitched for snow and falling leaves, an insulated shell, and an electrical feed from the house. Wood heat is an option outdoors. Our wood-burning saunas use the Harvia Cilindro 16 and are built only as standalone outdoor rooms or on trailers, which we build at the Fortville shop on a trailer you bring.

Commercial saunas in Columbus

Columbus is home to major employers, along with healthcare, gyms, and hotels. For employee wellness rooms, fitness centers, therapy practices, and hotel spas, Sauna Craft comes in as a subcontractor, with the GC holding the permit and the architect’s set governing the room. Accessible seating and clear floor space follow section 612 of the 2010 ADA Standards, and on an Indiana Class 1 building the state design release has to be in hand before we start. For staff-run rooms, Wi-Fi sauna controls let someone preheat the sauna and set its schedule from a phone.

Timeline from Fortville

A Columbus project usually means two trips south: one to measure and settle the design, and one for the build itself. Plan on one to two weeks of work once the start date is set, longer for a large or complex room, and a final walk-through so you know how to run the heater and controls.
